Spalding/Spelling We will formally begin spelling during Week 3. For Weeks 0-2 we will be reviewing phonograms and handwriting as well as practicing how to enter words into the Spalding notebook. On Friday of Week 0 we will do a cold 70-phonogram test as a baseline, no grade will be taken. On Thursday of Week 1 we will have a graded phonogram test over the first 26 phonograms (a-z including qu). Reading/Book Reports The first two days (Week 0) we will work together on The Ants and the Grasshopper to familiarize students with our reading curriculum and expectations. This first official week (Week 1), we will read The Bundle of Sticks. I will introduce what it means to answer a question in a full sentence restating the question. We will do the first reading test and vocabulary test with guidance on Thursday. Please study the vocabulary words with your child. Language We will review sentence types and parts of speech. Math We will work on graphs, time to the half hour, attributes of a rectangle, measuring length and width to the nearest inch, and doubles to 18. Science We will begin a unit entitled Animals Grow and Change. Social Studies We will begin our first social studies unit later. I will keep you posted via this newsletter.
Other There is a lot to learn and get used to these first weeks of school. Please help your child get into a good routine of homework starting Week 1.
Parents, please keep your placards visible in your car windows until your children are loaded into your car.
Whenever you are picking up your child, you will a Valley Academy approved ID. These include your car placard, Valley Academy badge, or a sticker from the office.
Please make sure your children know where they go at the end of the day. 2:15 pick up or Academic Arcade 3:15 car pick up, walk up pick up, or Coyote Club If your child walks home at 3:15, please email me and let me know.
If your child is in Coyote Club at pick up, but you come through the car pick up line, you will need to park and come in to sign your child out of Coyote Club.
The first VAPO meeting will be on August 14th at 8:15 a.m. VAPO is a great way to be involved in your child’s school. I encourage parents to attend if possible.
