Spalding/Spelling This week we will work with a 30-word review list. Next week we will start testing on 30 new words and 10 review words every week. On Thursdays we will have a pretest. Those who get 100% on the pretest will not have to take the Friday test. We will also test on 30 phonograms on Fridays. This week however, we will test all 70 phonograms but only grade the students on the first 26 phonograms.
Reading/Book Reports The first two days we will work together on The Ants and the Grasshopper to familiarize students with our reading curriculum and expectations. This first official week, we will read The Wolf and the Seven Kids. I will introduce what it means to answer a question in a full sentence restating the question. We will do the first reading test and vocabulary test with guidance on Thursday.
Language We will review sentence types and parts of speech.
Math We will work on graphs, time to the half hour, attributes of a rectangle, measuring length and width to the nearest inch, and doubles to 18.
Science We will begin a unit entitled Animals Grow and Change.
Social Studies We will begin our first social studies unit later. I will keep you posted via this newsletter.
Other There is a lot to learn and get used to this first week of school. Please help your child get into a good routine of homework that includes studying vocabulary and spelling words regularly. Parents, please keep your placards visible in your car windows until your children are loaded into your car. You can access this newsletter along with information about specials and homework online. Go to valleyacademy.com under Contact a Teacher, Classroom links. The first VAPO meeting will be on August 14th at 8:15 a.m. VAPO is a great way to be involved in your child’s school. I encourage parents to attend if possible.
